Draw an Anime Boy Full Body – This step-by-step tutorial explains how to draw an anime boy with a detailed classification of body measurements and general tips to achieve an anime look.

The boy in this study can be 10-15 years old. Depending on the style of the artists, sometimes older anime characters can be drawn to look younger. Usually, when characters are very stylish, they look younger (for example, Chibi).

Please note that the ratings below are suggestions and may vary by character and style.

If you are going to follow along with a pencil and paper, be sure to draw bright lines for the first steps of the drawing, as you will need to erase some later.

Step 1 – Anime Boy Body Breakdown

To make a character look younger, you will often draw him much thinner than his older counterpart. Physical characters will often appear older.

A good way to balance the body is to use the head.

Anime characters tend to have bigger heads compared to their bodies than real people (especially younger characters). In this lesson, the boy will have six and a half heads in length.

The height of the head and the “upper legs” of the body are about half the length of the whole body.

Arm Measurements

The part where the hand is attached to the arm will go down almost to the horizontal position of the body part. Please also keep in mind that the arms in this example are slightly tilted to the sides so that the joints are slightly lower when the arm area is raised directly with the body.

The area from the wrist to the elbow and the elbow to the shoulder is approximately equal in length.

Leg Measurements

The legs are about half the length of the whole body.

The length of the legs from below the foot to below the knee is approximately equal to the length from below the knee to the horizontal position of the body.

Please note that the “front” leg is painted larger for the view than the hind leg in a side view.

Step 2 – Body Drawing

Star a drawing from the head and go down.

Start with a clear line drawing of the whole body without the slightest detail.

Drawing Front View

The great challenge of body painting with a preview (without having the right dimensions) is that both sides are equal.

To help you start your drawing by first making a straight line of what will be in the middle of the body. This will help you ensure that both parts of the body are evenly spaced.

Drawing Side View

A side view of the body may be more challenging to draw than the front view.

On the side, look at the different parts of the body curve in slightly different ways, as shown in the example above.

Drawing Different Ideas

If you want to draw a body with different views but in the same place, you can project a set of lines from one view to another. This will help you ensure that the body measurements in both cases are the same.

Once you have finished drawing the body’s shape, you can clear any building lines.

Step 3 – Face Painting

Draw facial features before you dye your hair (including the parts covered with hair).

The reason you want to do this is to avoid mistakes.

Step 4 – Hair Design

With this hairstyle, draw part of the hair following the shape of the head but not as long as the hair has volume.

Draw the ends of the hair out into bumps of various sizes curled in slightly different ways.

Step 5 – Drawing Clothes

For this, we will draw a boy wearing a T-shirt, shorts, and shoes.

Drawing a T-shirt

The upper part of the T-shirt is neatly painted around the shoulders. Make the sleeves “come out” towards the edges. As the shirt is not very tight, leave space between the body and the shirt to hang over the wider chest area.

Pull the shirt slightly wider as the area will have some folding.

Short Drawing

Draw shorts starting at the bottom of the shirt (gently touch the legs) and then gently squeeze as they go down.

Drawing Shoes

You can draw the shape of the shoes to trace the shape of the feet but to a certain extent to determine the size of the material the shoes are made of.

Step 6 – Drawing Details

Details Details

Draw the inner details of the eyes, like pupils and reflections.

You can also paint the eyelids slightly above the eyes.

Shirt & Wrap Details

You can add a few lines at the bottom of the T-shirt to show wrap.

You can also draw thin lines on the ends of the sleeves as there will usually be stitches there.

Shorts & Wrap Details

In shorts, you can add some wrap in the middle where there is usually tension caused by the two legs pulling the shorts in different ways.

You can also add a pair of lines below for more details.

Knees

Draw just a little knee at the beginning of the view.

Shoe Details

With shoes, you can draw the interior details of their design.

Step 7 – Coloring

To color a drawing, you can fill each space with the correct color (make sure you leave the display white when you color the paper). Start with large areas and work your way up to the smallest.

Step 8 – Blurring & Finishing Drawing

In some basic anime styles, you can add shadows to areas that are often captured. The light comes from above in normal light conditions so that shadows will be cast down. In this case, the shadows will be on the neck from the head and arms and legs from the sleeves of the shirt and shorts.

On the face, there will be the following shadows:

  • From the hair
  • Around the eyelids
  • The upper part of the eyes (from the eyelids)
  • Next to the nose

Conclusion

This tutorial covers a lot of information about drawing a young male anime character. Although it provides a good basis for drawing these characters, please remember that this is just one example. You can test yourself to try to create a character that looks different.
